Sidelights: Road Trip

I can hear the muffled sound of the four wheel drive and the rush of the wind outside, as the driver shifts to high gear and cruise our way to infinity. I pull down the brim of my baseball cap and gaze at the road ahead.

The highway seems to twist and squirm under the scorching midsummer sun. At a distance, the quivering heat wave creates shapes of liquid phantom images shimmering on the pavement. Farther away, the blistering sea of red sand stretches accross the horizon, kissing the clear cerulean sky. There is no house in sight. Once in a while, stifling wind from the desert blows dust across the road. Counting road marks seems to be the only solace I have, to appreciate this otherwise boring monotonous trip.

I am on my way to the airport.

I am on my way home.

whoaa! What a scene.(Grabe nga dalan, daw bangkaw ba!)What a road! Almost spear-like!

Even those who do not know how to drive, definitely can drive in this kind of road.

I miss the desert.

Yes! Short write-up but very effective. Feel like grabbing an icy cold can of Coke while reading it. Really feel the heat comin' out of my plasma screen!

Another big one Boysie!

well, this a good breaker to shift away from the most heated discussion below.

you said that it is such a monotonous, boring and seems endless trip but at the end something is waiting... worth looking forward..the happiness of being at home...home sweet home. the way you expressed your emotions and thoughts while travelling it conveys excitement and curiousity on my part..i wish i am there to experience such feelings of being able to see the desert and travel along the way. beautiful writing, full of passion.

abi ko anay boy, your on your way back here again...these were your thoughts when you were on your way here for the burial? then maybe, while you gaze outside the window from the car, your mind is racing towards those hidden memories stashed in the back burner of your mind - thoughts of mom, random glitches of the life she lead. little glittering shards of memories, paradoxically clear for some reason.
the journey to the airport doesn't seem daunting after all.

as dumb as it sounds but i am also wondering about it, since you mentioned the camels on your way, same question with anonymous, he he he..sorry but i'm always curious about the way of life up there, especially the desert, i long to see and experience it, someday perhaps...

Yes, you can find herd of camels travelling along far-flung desert highways where traffic is not so busy. It’s a sight not to be missed. But deserts along busy main expressways are fenced off with wires to discourage camel crossings especially during nighttime. Apparently, some sections of the fencings does not last too long due to shifting sands and disaster happens sometimes.
